Central Silk Board, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India had approved over Rs. 4.84 crore project for the last year of Integrated Silk Development Scheme in Kangra and Bilaspur districts. Rs. 3.91 crore for the project would be borne by the Central Government, Rs. 0.51 crore by the State Government and the remaining amount by the earmarked beneficiaries. The project would be implemented during 2011-12 till the end of 12th Five Year Plan under Industries Department.
The main aim of the project was to accelerate the silk production thereby increasing the employment avenues in sericulture in these two districts. A target of 32 MT silk cocoon annually has been fixed in the project area.
Silk wing of Industries Department has been implementing the Silk Development Scheme in the areas of the State for silk production with the assistance of Silk Board. It is learned that an amount of Rs. 5.78 crore had been spent during 2010-11 for the same. Besides, a similar project is underway in Hamirpur district on which Rs. 1.38 crore had been spent.
