Leader of Opposition in Himachal Vidhansabha, Vidya Stokes, has demanded the Election Commission (EC) not to allow any relaxation in the enforcement of the model code of conduct and ensure that its sanctity is maintained at every cost till the election process is over.
In a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner, she pointed out that the EC had enforced the model code of conduct for six months during the Assembly elections in 2007. She asserted that the then Govt. had been reduced to a caretaker government. She added that the same yardstick should be used now.
Referring to the government’s request for a relaxation in the enforcement of the model code of conduct so that development work did not suffer, she pointed out that there is no justification in it.
