Two day long State level fourth Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Competition concluded at Shilaroo in Shimla. V.C. Pharka, Principal Secretary, Youth Services and Sports presided over the function. Una won the competition by defeating Mandi in the final.
Speaking on the occasion Pharka said that State Government was endeavouring to provide international facilities to players in the State and modern infrastructure was being created at every level. He said that Government was laying an Astroturf in Una by spending Rs. 5.5 crore. Synthetic athletic tracks were being prepared in Hamirpur and Dharamsala while modern badminton courts were being laid in Bilaspur, Shimla and Mandi besides Terraflex volleyball courts in Shimla, Una and Dharamsala.
He gave away trophy and cash prize of Rs. 15,000 to the winning team while a trophy and a cash prize of Rs. 10,000 to runner up team.
J.R. Katwal, Director, Youth Services and Sports welcomed the Chief Guest and said that Department was striving hard to provide State of the Art facilities to the players. He said that 180 players of ten teams participated in this competition and department spent Rs. 2400 on each player. He said that the State Government was spending Rs. 1.50 crore annually on different sports competitions. 280 outstanding players had been provided jobs in various government departments, he added.
Senior officers of the Youth and Sports Department and other prominent people were present on the occasion.
