Four Arrested, Including Alleged Supplier, in NIT Hamirpur Drug Death Case
Hamirpur – Tragedy struck the National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Hamirpur as a first-year student’s life was tragically cut short due to a Chitta (heroin) overdose. Sujal Sharma, a 22-year-old hailing from Panjgani in Bilaspur district, was discovered dead in his room at Dhauladhar Hostel, sending shockwaves through the academic community and the region.
The Hamirpur police acted swiftly, apprehending four individuals in connection with the devastating incident. Among those arrested was the alleged supplier of the heroin, Rajat alias Gifty of Hamirpur. Ishant Rana was the second student taken into custody. The police found 6.98 grams of heroin in their possession, confirming their connection to the fatal overdose.
Further investigations unveiled the central role played by Rajat alias Gifty as the primary supplier of the illicit substance. Two other students, both in their third year of B.Tech training, were also arrested, revealing the extent of the drug-related issues within the campus.
The tragic incident came to light when the police tracked the call details of the deceased student, ultimately leading them to Rajat and Ishant, who were apprehended near NIT Hamirpur. Inside their vehicle, the police discovered the heroin, providing compelling evidence of their involvement.
Sujal Sharma’s lifeless body was found in room 211 of Dhauladhar Hostel, a discovery that sent shockwaves through the NIT Hamirpur community. In response, Dr. Aakriti Sharma, Superintendent of Police in Hamirpur, and her team quickly arrived at the scene. Preliminary investigations indicated that the young student’s death resulted from a drug overdose, leading to the registration of a culpable homicide case under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the grave dangers associated with drug abuse among students, underscoring the necessity for stricter measures to prevent such incidents in educational institutions.
The incident not only highlights the pressing need for addressing drug abuse within the academic community but also serves as a call to action for institutions to implement preventive measures to ensure the safety and well-being of their students.
