The Himachal Pradesh Police has taken eight Chinese nationals into custody from Chauntra Village of Mandi District, where a large settlement of Tibetan exiles lives. Police have also seized currency worth Rs. 30 lakh from these men.
These Chinese nationals had come to India on tourist visa but were illegally staying at a rented place and were working as carpenters and painters in Chauntra town. The police have booked them under charges of visa violation.
The arrest comes at a time when the threat against Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama was intensifying. The Himachal police and a unit of the Intelligence Bureau are currently interrogating the Chinese nationals.
