Taking suo motu notice of the Beas tragedy, where 24 students of Vigyan Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology, Bachuapalli of Hyderabad were washed away in Beas River, the Himachal High Court directed the state government to file the status report by 16 June.
The High Court treated the news reports in this regard as PIL.
The High Court bench of Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan said it was not only a case of callousness but also grave negligence. Court observed
“It’s a sad tale by reason of the fact that sheer fun of the young students turned out to be fatal as a consequence of utter and callous negligence of the power project authorities,”
Court has sought the detail whether the project authorities followed standard operating procedure before releasing water.
The Himachal Pradesh High Court has also asked the hydropower project authorities to take all remedial measures so as to avoid any mishap in future.
