In the wake of modernization, the traditional watermills, gharats, which dotted the river banks of Himachal Pradesh and were facing neglect now are being revived and upgraded for electricity generation and efficiency enhancement in many areas of the state.
The World Wide Fund (WWF) Shimla regional office is implementing the project of upgrading the watermills in the state under the GEF UNDP small grants programme and one such initiative has been launched in Rakchham village of Kinnaur district, where two watermills have been upgraded and are generating electricity up to 4 KW per watermill.
