Himachal’s Apple Harvest Falls by 50%, Horticulture Sector Faces Up to ₹2,000 Crore Loss

Poor weather conditions slash apple output by nearly 50 per cent, triggering a 30–35 per cent decline in business activity in Shimla; season extended until November 10

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh’s apple industry has suffered a major setback this year, with production falling by nearly 50 per cent compared to the previous season. The state, which recorded an apple harvest of approximately 3.50 crore boxes last year, is estimated to have produced only around 1.70 crore boxes this season. The sharp decline of nearly 1.80 crore boxes has been attributed to unfavourable weather conditions, dealing a severe blow to orchardists and the state’s horticulture-based economy.

The impact of the poor harvest has extended well beyond the orchards, affecting businesses associated with transportation, packaging, agricultural markets and other commercial activities. Several sectors have witnessed a significant slowdown, with business activity in Shimla reportedly declining by 30 to 35 per cent. The reduced income of apple growers has also affected consumer spending, creating a ripple effect across the state’s economy.

As per estimate, approximately 1.40 crore boxes of apples had reached the markets so far. And final production estimate of around 1.70 crore boxes includes not only apples sold through mandis but also produce procured under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS), stored in Controlled Atmosphere (CA) facilities and handled through the State Agricultural Marketing Board and Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs).

The consequences of the disappointing apple season are becoming increasingly visible in the state’s commercial centres, particularly Shimla, where a substantial section of traders depends on the purchasing power of orchardists and rural consumers. It’s estimate that so far, traders in Shimla have experienced a 30 to 35 per cent drop in sales compared to the normal apple season.

Orchardists and residents from rural apple-growing areas are among the major consumers in Shimla’s markets. Normally, the apple season brings increased cash flow into rural areas as growers receive payments for their produce. This additional income translates into higher spending on household goods, clothing, construction materials and other commodities, providing a boost to local businesses.

However, with this year’s harvest falling significantly short of expectations, orchardists have received lower returns, directly affecting their purchasing capacity. As a result, traders across Shimla are experiencing reduced sales and weaker market activity.
