An official spokesman said that State Government had given its approval for procurement of apples under Market Intervention Scheme for 2013 season.
He said that about 90,343 metric tonnes of apples would be procured under MIS from 22nd July to 31st October, 2013 in the State. He said that apples would be procured at Rs. 6.50 per kg under the scheme and added that handling charges would be @Rs. 1.95 per kg for procurement of apples. He said that procurement of apples would be made through HPMC, HIMFED and Horticulture Department and procurement centres manned by the employees of procurement agencies and Horticulture Department.
Spokesman said that 260 procurement centres would be opened and added that more procurement centres could also be opened on the demand of apple growers. He said that apples would only be procured from horticulture card-holders not from the contractors.
He said that under the scheme procurement of apples would be done in 18 Kilogram Bags/ Crates having 2.5 percent more fruits.
