An FIR Ordered Against DGP Sanjay Kundu Amidst Allegations of Threats

Shimla – In an interesting development, an FIR against the state’s Director General of Police (DGP), Sanjay Kundu, will be registered in Kangra. This decision comes in response to allegations made by Palampur businessman Nishant Kumar Sharma, who claims to have faced threats to his life and attempts at extortion.

Advocate General Anoop Ratan addressed the media, disclosing that the FIR against DGP Sanjay Kundu is set to be investigated following the submission of a status report in the Himachal Pradesh High Court on Thursday. The report, presented by SP Kangra and SP Shimla, sheds light on the accusations levied by Sharma against the state’s top law enforcement officer.

The businessman, Nishant Kumar Sharma, had approached the High Court on October 28, 2023, through email, citing concerns for the safety of himself and his family. In his communication to the court, Sharma expressed apprehension that he could face severe harm or even lose his life at the hands of Police Chief Sanjay Kundu. Shockingly, he revealed a prior attack in Gurugram, where he managed to survive.

The gravity of the situation escalated when Sharma detailed an incident involving two individuals on a motorcycle who intercepted him between Bhagsunag and McLeodganj. Allegedly, they issued threats, reinforcing his fear for his life. Adding to the intrigue, Sharma disclosed receiving 14 calls from the DGP’s office in a single day, with additional calls from DSP and SHO Palampur. The SHO informed him through WhatsApp that the DGP sought a meeting, compelling him to call the DGP office.

In a surprising turn of events, the DGP allegedly insisted that Sharma travel to Shimla for a face-to-face meeting, raising eyebrows and deepening the businessman’s concerns. Through email correspondence, Sharma revealed an unsettling twist to the narrative, suggesting that pressure was being exerted on him by influential figures in Himachal Pradesh with the aim of extorting money.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court, taking cognizance of the seriousness of the matter, summoned status reports from SP Shimla and SP Kangra. The court has also issued a notice to the Home Secretary, indicating the gravity of the situation. With the assurance from the government that an FIR will be filed based on Sharma’s complaint, the legal proceedings are poised to unfold, shedding light on the truth behind the unsettling allegations against the high-ranking law enforcement official.
