Chief Justice, Himachal Pradesh High Court, Justice Kurian Joseph, called upon the law enforcing agencies to adopt a pro-active approach to eliminate domestic violence from the society. He was speaking in the inaugural of the two day long Sensitization Programme for police personnel, magistrates, protection officers and members of NGO’s on Issues Related to Domestic Violence organized by H.P. State Legal Services Authority here today.
Chief Justice said that dignity of womanhood had been upholded by the Constitution and added that Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 was enacted for effective implementation of the rights provided to women in the Constitution. He said that appropriate provisions had been made under the law to provide relief to the victims of domestic violence however focus should be on prevention of its occurrence.
Justice Kurian Joseph said that mass awareness was an effective solution to check domestic violence in the society. He said that society especially men, should be sensitized about the provisions under law to refrain from subjecting women to harassment. He urged the duty holders to perform their duties more effectively and win over the confidence of victims of such incidents. He also stressed upon providing complete support and relief to victims who were otherwise socially ostracized, which should not happen in a healthy society.
Speaking on the occasion, Justice R.B.Mishra, Judge, Himachal Pradesh High Court and Executive Chairman H.P. State Legal Services Authority said that women were highly respected in Indian Society and our scriptures also preach us to uphold the dignity of womanhood. He said that Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005 was enacted for further protecting the rights of women and to ensure them to lead a respectable life in the society.
D.K.Sharma, Member Secretary, H.P. State Legal Services Authority welcomed the Chief Justice and others. He detailed about the aims and objectives of the two day long Sensitization Programme. D.C. Choudhry, Judge, Himachal Pradesh High Court, R.K.Bawa, Advocate General were prominent among others present on the occasion.
