Himachal Pradesh University celebrated its 45th Foundation Day here today. Governor Urmila Singh was the Chief Guest and Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh presided over the function.

Congratulating the students, faculty members and staff of the University, Urmila Singh underlined the importance of education. She said that education was the most powerful instrument to empower any society. She said that education develops progressive attitude in individuals besides equipping them with knowledge.

Governor said that ideal atmosphere should be provided to students in educational institutions so that the hidden potential of students could come to fore ensuring all round development of their personalities. Teachers had great responsibility in achieving this goal because they are considered as role models, she added. She said that teachers play an important role in nation building therefore must work with sincerity and dedication towards this task.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh congratulated the Faculty and students of the University and said that such high learning centers play a pivotal role in development of the nation and shaping the career of its students besides empowering them with treasure house of vast knowledge towards a better tomorrow.

He said that the HPU has traversed a long journey of 45 years and has emerged as one of the pioneer institution in imparting quality education to the students, adding that it was a matter of pride that the HPU has been ranked at 22nd position out of 170 universities in a survey conducted by an independent agency throughout the country, adding that efforts should be to increase its ranking amongst first ten top universities in next five years.

Both the Governor and the Chief Minister distributed awards to the best Teaching, Non-Teaching staff and researchers/scholars.

Amongst the Category of the Best Teacher Prof Girija Sharma and Prof Bhupinder Singh Marh were honoured on the occasion. Amongst the best researcher, the award was given to Prof Suarvecha Chauhan, In non teaching category Sh. Harbans Singh Karar was adjudged best while Dr Vikas Sharma Computer Professional was given the Award Posthumously.

Inder Dutt Lakhan Pal, Chief Parliamentary Secretary, Bambhar Thakur, MLA Rajinder Singh Chauhan Pro-Vice Chancellor, HPU Prof Mohan Jharta, Registrar were also present on the occasion amongst the teaching faculty and the students.
