Himachal Pradesh Cabinet approved Himachal Pradesh Municipal (Amendment) Ordinance, 2013 and Himachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2013 to restore old system of indirect elections to the office of President & Vice Presidents of Municipal Councils/Nagar Panchayats and for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in Municipal Corporation Shimla.
Previous BJP led government had introduced direct election for the post of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in MC Shimla, which had cost party hard as even after getting majority of councilors in the house, CPM candidates got elected to the prestigious posts. It was first time in the history of MC Shimla when non-congress backing candidates head the Corporation
