As availability of water is faltering with summer rush of tourists and shrinking water sources, the Shimla Municipal Corporation has decided to resort to rationing of water by making it available on alternate days to ensure equitable distribution of water.

Shimla Municipal Corporation Engineer Vijay Gupta said

Water would be available on alternate days in rotation to the people and Irrigation and Water Supply department, supplying water to Shimla Municipal Corporation, has informed that there has been a steep fall in availability of water at main sources at Gumma and Ashwani Khud and the situation could worsen if there are no rains in the next two-three days

The Irrigation and Public Health department is supplying 34 MLD of water against requirement of 38 MLD but in view of impending crisis due to continued dry spell and problem of low voltage at Giri scheme, the pumping of water has been affected, he added. With rationing of water, all residences would get supply of water on the third day.
