Aiming to tighten noose on private medical colleges in the state, the Himachal Government has approved amendment to HP Private Medical Educational Institution Act, making it mandatory for colleges to get affiliation from HPU, and sending ordinance for the Governor approval.

The government is seeking Governor’s approval to amend sub-section 6 of section 3 of the (Regulation of Admission and fixation of Fee) Act by inserting a new clause 6(a).

Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur termed it necessary and claimed the clause will ensure common standards for maintaining the excellence of medical education in the state as the Himachal Pradesh University shall have the exclusive right to affiliate private medical colleges set up in the state.

The move will be a major setback for Maharishi Markandeshwar Medical College Kumarhatti, Solan, and will give rest to the affiliation controversy as it will force medical college to get affiliated to HPU.

As per state government, essentiality certificate (EC) was given to the college on the condition that it would be affiliated to HPU, but it allegedly violated the terms of EC and instead got affiliated to Maharshi Markendeshwar University.

The state government written several time to medical college and also approached Medical Council of India, but its all plea were ignored and surprisingly given permission to admit 150 students each in three batches of MBBS by the MCI.
