Congress led Himachal Govt starts verification of private universities’ land records

Himachal Pradesh government has initiated probe into the alleged irregularities involving the opening of numerous private universities in the state and has started verification of private universities’ land records. To find out the real picture, Govt. officials are checking the records and also conducting physical verification of these universities. Couple of days before, Kadaghat tehsildar has visited the campus of a private university located on the outskirts of Shimla to check the land details. University authorities said that their records were found correct.

Congress had since long maintained that private universities were being opened in the state in complete violation of norms and some universities were allowed to buy land beyond permissible limits in violation of section 118. Congress leaders have also alleged that in the name of universities, shops are being opened and had expressed apprehension that private universities would later turn into real estate or tourism business as the BJP regime had allowed change of land use after 25 years and had demanded an increase in change of land use period to 50 years to protect the interests of students.

Congress leaders had also raised questions over the infrastructure and lack of qualified staff in alleged private universities and thus now probe team is looking into all the necessary points of investigations. Besides infrastructure created by each university, faculty available with them are under probe to find out which university is seriously into teaching business and which are the universities opened for the purpose of diversifying land use into some other business.
