Public Works Minister Thakur Gulab Singh revealed in the meeting with the senior officers of the Public Works Department that District Level Review Committees would be constituted under the chairmanship of respective Deputy Commissioners to take stock of situation leading to road accidents in the State and give suggestions for taking corrective measures to minimize the same.

Thakur Gulab Singh said that with the increasing vehicular traffic in the State, the accidents have also increased in the same proportion. He said that it was felt that there was no mechanism at the district level to monitor this phenomenon and suggest remedial measures to check road accidents. He said that in order to save the precious human lives by adopting proper mechanism, the State Government has decided to constitute District Level Review Committees in all the districts of the State.

Public Works Minister said that the Committee would review all such constraints faced by the road users by enforcing the available provisions of law. He said that Superintendent of Police of the respective district and Superintending Engineer, Public Works Department of that district would be the other members of the Committee. He said that the Review Committee would meet once in a month and review various aspects regarding road safety in order to ensure smooth flow of traffic in the district. He said that the Committees would help in identifying black spots besides ensuring state of preparedness of health facilities to deal with road accident cases and identify locally available resources.

Thakur Gulab Singh said that the Committees would also give its suggestions for preparing traffic plans during the tourist season fairs and religious congregations for smooth and safe plying of vehicles. He said that it would also initiate corrective measures at local level to reduce incidents of accident. He said that these Committees would also deliberate upon various constraints faced by the road users and give suggestions to mitigate the same.

Public Works Minister said that these Committees would be at liberty to co-opt other members at district level such as Chief Medical Officer, Regional Transport Officer and representatives of the transport sector. He said that the provisions of the Himachal Pradesh Road Infrastructure Protection Act, 2002 would be enforced strictly. He said that the general public would also be educated regarding the general provisions of the Act of safety of the commuters in the State. Ajay Mittal, Principal Secretary, Public Works, Dr Ajay Sharma, Special Secretary, Public Works and other senior offices of the Department attended the meeting
