National Commission for Scheduled Tribes, Government of India under the chairmanship of Dr. Rameshwar Oraon is on five days visit to Himachal Pradesh from 14th to 18th July, 2011. In a meeting held with Director General of Police today, the Commission expressed satisfaction over the speedy disposal of cases pertaining of SC/ST and lauded the efforts of the State Government for implementing various policies and programmes aimed at welfare of SC/ST and weaker sections of the society.

Later, the Commission meets the Chief Secretary and other senior Government officers and reviewed the schemes launched by the State Government. The Commission expressed contentment over the living standards of Scheduled Tribes and observed that it was only possible due to various welfare policies and budgetary provisions made for ST population in the State.

The Commission also held meeting with Vice Chancellor, Himachal Pradesh University and discussed about reservation to STs in admissions and services in the University. The Commission also inspected Hostels of STs and took stock of the facilities being provided to students of the community.
