In a meeting, the Himachal Pradesh Cabinet has decided to rename the free school uniform scheme to “Mahatma Gandhi Vardi Yojna”. Cabinet also ordered to constitute a committee under the Chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary (F&CS) to finalize the purchase of cloth, specification, design, colour and handling charges etc.

This scheme was launched by previous Govt. led by BJP under the name Atal Uniform Scheme, in May last year. However, Congress has objected the name and claimed that it was a centrally funded scheme.

The Atal Free School Uniform Scheme has benefited nearly 10 lakh students, of classes I-X. It is learned that Rs 20 crore was being spent on the scheme from Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan funds and the remaining amount came from the state government.

New ruling party has already removed the name of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee from ambulance services and done away with distribution of jute bags carrying his picture.
