Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal has invited the Centre to establish a model military cantonment at Una on the pattern of Mamun or Ambala Cantt. In a letter to Union Defence Minister AK Antony, Chief Minister said that Himachal had been a nursery of outstanding brave soldiers who had shown exemplary courage in performing their duties. The state had willing youth to serve in the armed forces and their parents felt proud in sending their children to serve in the armed forces.
Chief Minister advices Una area for the cantonment as its geographical situation will be an ideal location to establish a model military cantonment as the area had a good road and rail connectivity and proximity to the western frontiers, whereas its proximity to the China border would be an added locational advantage.
Chief Minister said Himachal was ideal with a mix of plains, semi-hills and mountainous terrain to cater to the training requirements of soldiers. P.K Dhumal assured the Union Minister of making the required land and other infrastructural facilities available for the cantonment and the Military Garrison on priority.
